The exhibition entitled “Meeting the modern age” which presents objects from the holdings of the King Nikola Museum, the Ethnographic Museum and the Njegoš Museum, is open for viewing in the exhibition space of Njegoš’s Billiards in Cetinje.
Thanks to the education, personal affinities and interest of the ruler of the Montenegrin Petrović-Njegoš dynasty, scientific achievements, technical-technological progress and cultural changes during the 19th century, within the framework of objective historical and social circumstances, economic opportunities and aesthetic understandings, began to reach Montenegro, gradually changing their understandings, forms of state organization, traditional way of doing business and established norms of behavior and social life.
The exhibition features items such as the inventions of the time – the microscope and the camera; the newspapers that Njegoš introduced into the traditional national costume, which took on the characteristics of a kind of mark of political and military status; a set of uniforms which, in addition to the national costume, was the special ruling costume of Prince Danilo I; then modern European furniture, textile furniture, dishes, household appliances, machines and means of transport. Of particular value are the clothes of Montenegrin princesses who followed European fashion trends.
