The Archaeological Museum is the youngest unit of the National Museum of Montenegro. Thanks to the Program for the Protection and Preservation of Cultural Heritage of the Montenegrin Ministry of Culture, the Archaeological Museum conducted archaeological and conservation research within the project "Paths of Continuity".

The "Paths of Continuity" project included:

- research of prehistoric sites;

– Research of ancient sites;

– Exploration of early medieval and medieval fortifications from the 6th to the 15th century.

Archaeological and conservation research activities were aimed at collecting archaeological material for the Archaeological Museum of Montenegro. New knowledge about the researched archaeological sites will serve as a basis for defining the continuity of life and the settlement process on the territory of Montenegro, from prehistoric times to the present day. Targeted research of well-known and very significant archaeological sites brought scientific discoveries from different periods of history, built on archaeological and conservation research and the protection of Montenegrin cultural heritage. During the archaeological research, rich movable archaeological material was discovered, which served as the basis for the formation of the museum collection, which is used for the creation of the permanent exhibition of the Archaeological Museum of Montenegro.

In the courtyard of the Njegoš Museum, a lapidarium was opened as an integral part of the Archaeological Museum. Its main purpose is to provide a space where representative examples of decorative stone pieces from all the main archaeological sites in Montenegro will be exhibited. Currently, there are eleven old tombstones (stećak) in the Lapidarium, from the territory of the municipalities of Nikšić and Pljevlja.
