Founded in 1926

The National Museum of Montenegro is a museum of a complex type consisting of several organizational units: the Historical Museum, which includes a permanent exhibition in the Government House, the Museum of King Nikola, the Museum of Peter II Petrović Njegoš, Njegoš's birth house, Njegoš's mausoleum on Lovćen and the Relief of Montenegro; The Art Museum with the Gallery of Contemporary Art "Miodrag Dado Ðurić", the Ethnographic Museum and the newly founded Archaeological Museum with the Lapidarium. Museums are located in buildings that are cultural and historical monuments of the greatest importance. The Government House building, built in 1910 in the neo-Renaissance style, is today the administrative headquarters of the National Museum, which houses the permanent exhibits of the Museum of History and Art. All units of the National Museum of Montenegro (except for Njegoš's birthplace and the Mausoleum at Lovcen) are located in the historical center of Cetinje.

- In 1838, a special space was created in Biljarda where trophy weapons, flags and church objects are exhibited. In 1890, the museum was moved to the Laboratory building, and in 1896, the Law on the Princely Montenegrin Library and Museum was passed, and the museum was established in the building of the Zeta House.

- In 1926, the State Museum was founded in the court of the last Montenegrin ruler, King Nikola. In 1950, the National Gallery was founded, from which the Art Museum was born, and a year later, the Ethnographic Museum, the Njegoš Museum and the NOB Museum were founded. In 1989, the permanent exhibition of the Historical Museum was established. The institution "Cetinje Museums" was transformed into the "National Museum of Montenegro" in 1992.

- In 2002, the Ethnographic Museum was placed in the building of the former Serbian embassy. In the same year, the Atelier Dado gallery was opened. In 2012, the Archaeological Museum was founded, and the lapidary was opened in the courtyard of the Billiard. On Trg Balšića Pazar, the contemporary gallery "Miodrag Dado Đurić" was opened in 2012, in the adapted building of the former Trgopromet. In 2018, the Ethnographic Museum received its first permanent exhibition.
