The exhibition of the National Museum of Montenegro entitled “European fashion at the Montenegrin court – reflections” was opened tonight in the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Independence in Skopje.

The event was attended by the highest officials of North Macedonia, including Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, Speaker of the Assembly Talat Džaferi and Minister of Internal Affairs Oliver Spasovski, as well as numerous visitors and guests.

At the opening of the exhibition, the Minister of Culture in the Government of Montenegro Aleksandar Bogdanović, the Minister of Culture in the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia Asaf Ademi, the director of the National Museum of Montenegro Dr. Anastazija Miranović and the director of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Independence Danijela Nikolov spoke.

Addressing the audience, Minister Bogdanović emphasized that tonight’s exhibition represents a new step towards the cultural connection of the two countries.

For this reason, I am glad that in Skopje we are presenting an exhibition that is unique in many respects, the concept of which is focused on those contents of our past that have received less attention in historiographical and artistic reviews of Montenegrin heritage – he emphasized.

Minister Bogdanović also emphasized the importance of the current visit to North Macedonia, which – as he said – represents the basis for deeper cooperation during the upcoming period.

Believing that our country will soon host a similar event where fragments of the past of North Macedonia will be presented to the Montenegrin audience, I would like to express my special gratitude to the partners who supported this multimedia exhibition. In support of this good practice, I would like to remind you of the importance of substantive cooperation with the Ministry of Culture of North Macedonia – all the more so because we are facing a period of joint work and realization of the opportunities offered by cross-border cooperation programs – he concluded.

Minister Ademi expressed his satisfaction that Skopje is hosting a multimedia exhibition that uniquely portrays a part of Montenegrin past, in synthesis with contemporary artistic media.

This impressive exhibition is one of those projects that confirm the importance of cooperation and exchange of projects between institutions from the countries of the region and beyond. I believe that support for such projects is crucial in the development of policies of cultural diversity and creativity, and that it is also important for the democratic cultural development of our societies – said Ademi.

He also spoke about the current visit of Minister Bogdanović, pointing out that there are plenty of fields for cooperation.

I would like to thank my colleague, Minister Bogdanović, with whom I had an extremely constructive conversation, after which we signed the Program on Cultural Cooperation between our countries. Our common goal, to which we will be fully committed, is to increase the number of cultural events that will be held through the partnership of institutions from North Macedonia and Montenegro in the coming time – he concluded.

Director of the National Museum of Montenegro, Dr. Anstazija Miranović, was present
was introduced to the fact that the exhibits from the palace treasury, thanks to this exhibition, are exhibited for the first time outside the borders of Montenegro.

We are also honored to present the exhibition “European fashion at the Montenegrin court – reflections” in North Macedonia, a friendly country with which we share a common cultural Balkan space.I believe that this is just the beginning of the successful cooperation between our two museums and that exciting, high-quality projects of exchange and cooperation await us in the coming period – said Miranović.

Director of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Independence Danijela Nikolova
she emphasized the fact that this is the first visiting Montenegrin exhibition in North Macedonia.

For this reason, it is our honor that it is happening right in our Museum. I believe that this evening is also an opportunity to start a successful partnership between us and the National Museum of Montenegro – she emphasized.

The exhibition “European fashion at the Montenegrin court – reflections” depicts fashion trends in the context of cultural events and social changes in Montenegro at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The largest part of the collection consists of the clothes of Montenegrin princesses Ksenija and Vjera and daughters-in-law, princesses Milica – Juta and Natalija – Lili, who followed European fashion. Formal dresses from the museum collection are a reflection of their subtle taste, high social status and standards, as well as a testimony of the modern style of dress in European metropolises on
the beginning of the 20th century. Part of the exhibition is dedicated to contemporary reflections on
given topic.

The authors of the project are Dr. Anastazija Miranović, Tatjana Jović and Isidora
Kovačević, and the exhibition will be open until the first of July.
