Milena Petrović Njegoš was a key figure in the history of Montenegro. Her commitment to humanitarian activities make her an exceptional personality.
Princess and later queen Milena Petrović Njegoš, née Vukotić, was the wife of Nicholas I, ruler of Montenegro.
She was born in Čevo on May 4, 1847.
Milena married the young prince Nikola in 1860 and was a princess until 1910, when she became queen. The royal couple had twelve children, nine daughters and three sons.
After Nikola’s death in emigration in 1921 to Cap d’Antibes, Milena was regent of the royal government until her death (1921–1923).
She was also known for the fact that unlike her daughters, who “always wore European clothes”, Queen Milena always wore national costumes.
